Srabanti Roy

Srabanti Roy is a Kathak and Bharatanatyam dancer based in the Washington DC area. Srabanti has been a long time IDEA member. She has received extensive training in Indian classical dances - Kathak and Bharatanatyam from India under the able guidance of Guru Smt. Sreelekha Mukherjee and then continues to enrich her education in Kathak under Guru Madhumita Roy (senior disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj). She has been dancing at a senior/professional level for almost 30 years.
Srabanti started her training in dance at the tender age of 2.5 years of age. Even though her training initially started in Kathak a few years later since the age of 6 she started to learn Bharatanatyam. She has been trained in Lucknow Gharana style of Kathak. She is a Nritya Prabhakar Degree (Graduate Degree) holder in Kathak from prestigious dance and music institution Prayag Sangeet Samiti based in Allahabad, India. She continues to enrich her education and knowledge in these dance forms as she believes there is no end to learning.
Srabanti is very well versed in folk, contemporary and Rabindrik (dances choreographed to songs composed by Rabindranath Tagore). She has choreographed and presented numerous dance presentations in these dance styles both in India and US.
Srabanti is the artistic director of her dance school Roomjhoom Nrityalaya based in Fairfax, VA. She has been teaching in the Washington DC area since 1996. She has choreographed/participated in multiple productions both in India, US. Some of the notable venues where she and her school participated were at the The Kennedy Center Performing Arts (Concert Hall, Terrace Theater and Millennium Stage), The Wolf Trap National Park for Performing Arts, The National Cherry Blossom Festival, The Lincoln Theatre to name a few. She and her students have performed at several IDEA performances/productions/festivals over the years. She has also performed with her students and as a solo performer at the DC area TV stations like MHz Networks and local PBS station.
Srabanti has held faculty positions as a Kathak Teacher at the India School in Bethesda, MD from 2005-2007 and as a Bharatanatyam Teacher at The India International School in Annandale, VA from 1996-2000.
Srabanti holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering from George Mason University, Fairfax, VA and a Masters Degree in Systems Engineering from George Washington University, Washington DC. Besides pursuing her passion for dance and running her own school she works full-time as a Spacecraft Design Engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, MD.
